  • Callers can speak with counselors to help them handle the difficult emotions they may experience such as stress, anxiety and the grieving process.   • The PanIIT Katrina Relief Help Line (http://www.lambdanets.com/katrina/) is operated by the Indian-American community in Houston, that has joined in relief efforts which range from fundraising to folding clothes, cooking vegetarian food, throwing open their homes to accommodate those in need. It is a consolidated effort by over 40 Indian-American organizations that have divided the chores among themselves.   • If you are in the New Orleans area, a GENERAL EVACUATION of the ENTIRE CITY has been ORDERED.
  • You may need to rescue yourself. THINK, then ACT. However, sometimes the best action is to do nothing.
  • If you are in your house and move up to your attic, MAKE SURE YOU HAVE TOOLS TO CUT THROUGH TO THE ROOF, IF NECESSARY.

If you need help and are in the affected area, you should call your local first responders. That is generally the Police or Sheriff's Department or the Fire Deparment. If your need is urgent, dial 911. There are no reports whether GM's vehicle based OnStar system is functional.
