Robin Panagal from Paws Belle Chase, LA formed a temporary shelter during Katrina and has been sheltering animals since. Belle Chase Animal Control is going to 'give' her 300 more animals by the end of this month! She is looking immediately for shelter and I believe transport for these animals. If you can help, please call her at 251 -948 -7074.

PLEASE HELP ROICY/ LAFAYETTE, LOUISIANA
Date: Sat, 29 Oct 2005 12:35:28 -0500 From: "DH Payne" mailto:dhpayne@cox-internet-dot-com Subject: PLEASE HELP ROICY/ LAFAYETTE, LOUISIANA
PERMISSION TO CROSSPOST !!!!!!!!
I have just finished posting the pics for the animals put up for adoption yesterday. We have a great group of animals this week, and will need a miracle to get them out.
I have gotten lots of questions about Roicy lately so will try and give some info.
Lafayette is just about in the middle of the areas devastated by hurricanes Katrina and Rita. Many of the rescue groups who pulled from Roicy are from those areas and cannot help us right now. Even if their homes are OK, there are very few if any adoptions taking place in those areas at the present time. Our local rescues have had to take in animals from those who can no longer keep them, in addition to taking back animals they placed with people in the affected areas and of course those dropped in their yards during the night. Local adoptions are way down, as many families here have evacuees living with them now.
Roicy is a small rabies control facility, not an adoption facility. They euthanize twice a week, not to kill twice as many animals, but to euthanize fewer per time so as not to stress the animals.
Deadlines are Mondays and Thursdays at 5. They euthanize Tuesday and Friday mornings.
They are getting a huge volume of calls from all over the US, some of them quite ugly. The shelter personnel have nothing to do with policy...that is the police department. It is counter-productive to tie up their phones unless you can help, and quite frankly calling them up and yelling at them for killing animals hurts local rescue efforts, as well as the morale of the employees. If you want to place blame, place it squarely on the shoulders of the people here who refuse to spay/neuter their animals.
Roicy will work with legitimate, non-profit rescue groups with proof of non profit status. Arrangements must be made in advance with Virginia Lee, the shelter director(a retired canine officer and a nice lady, by the way). You must work out transport. They will adopt out of state but it must be done in person...no shipping of animals to you. And no, those of us who pull for rescues will not pull for an individual and ship to you...you must go through a rescue group or come in person.
They are excellent at judging temperament....you will not find a bad one in the bunch. It is not uncommon for the adult dogs to be heartworm positive. Rescue treats for about $140-250 here....you could pay much more where you are. It is routine for us....just must keep the animal quiet.
There were 5 generous people from other states who donated to those rescue groups who pulled last week and it is greatly appreciated.
Will Roicy give an animal more time if you make a donation....no, and you do not want to donate money to Roicy....they must turn it over to the general fund and Roicy won't get the money. My suggestion would be to try and partner with a rescue group here by making a donation to save an animal, but please understand if they cannot help you. They go WAY beyond their limits and these hurricanes have been a nightmare for them.
Project Halo stepped in and pulled each week for about a month right after hurricane Katrina. We don't know what we would have done without them. We need help from other out of town groups now, especially for all these cats. My personal favorites, as always, are the black Labs. Deadline for this group is 5 PM October 31. They try to hold over, but they are super crowded and nowhere for them to put the animals. Some will be held over and some won't.
Thank you for caring about this little shelter.
Debbie
