Pit Bull Rescue Info.. Please Help 23:59

PERMISSION TO CROSSPOST!!!!

Ok, just got off a long phone conversation with Leah at Spindletop ( http://www.spindletoprefuge.org/ ) - I hope I got all this right, if anything is missing or incorrect I apologize! Basically she needs some quick help with a few things:

1. SMART MEDIA cards for cameras, or cash (Paypal) to buy some - Leah is making yet another trip to LA to try to catalog some of the hundreds of pit bulls down there- only about 600 are listed on Petfinder, and she says there are literally thousands more. Dogs are "disappearing" without ever being listed anywhere, not sure if they are in shelters, adopted, or pts. So she needs to have multiple media cards for the camera, so she can take pics of as many as possible, and try to get them reunited with their families. She is leaving SUNDAY 10/2 so would either need the media cards overnighted to her, or donations by Paypal so she can go buy some locally.

2. GAS MONEY! These trips to LA are costing approximately $350-400 per trip just in gas money, so as long as she's got gas money, she'll continue to make trips to pull dogs. Paypal donations work best, as she has a Paypal debit card she can use for gas. Even if you can only send $5, please do so - every gallon of gas helps!

Paypal to Spindletop mailto:spindletoprescue@aol-dot-com or https://www.paypal.com/affil/pal=spindletoprescue%40aol.com.

Or by snail mail:
Spindletop
PMB 106
10807 Jones Rd
Houston Tx 77065

3. PERSONAL contact with- Laura Maloney, of the SPCA if you have worked with her- please NICELY ask, why Spindletop Rescue is being denied access to pull pit bulls and place them with approved foster homes. Leah has put in several applications (the process down there is very confusing- basically you have to get permission to save dogs, and they pick and choose which dogs they let leave) and left multiple messages which have been ignored.

Points to make are- Leah will come and personally evaluate the pit bulls, and no "bad" dogs will be placed in fosters. She has approved foster homes waiting to accept these dogs, a veterinarian to examine them for health certificates, and an airline helping to facilitate shipping them out of Baton Rouge.

4. FOSTER HOMES - This is a biggie. If we could get FIVE dogs in fosters in each state, that would be 250+ dogs that she could save. Please do not say you can, if you don't intend to follow thru - she's had several do this already, and this causes problems with the numbers of dogs she's dealing with- causing her to have to pay to board other dogs to make room for dogs that were supposed to be in foster homes that backed out.

This would be a MANDATORY 60 day hold, per Spindletop rules, to give owners a chance to claim dogs. Dogs being fostered need to be kept apart from other dogs in the house for about 5 days, as there is a mild upper respiratory infection going around, nothing serious, clears up w/antibiotics in about 5 days. Fosters need to specify exactly WHAT they can take- male/female, age (adult, puppy, etc), level of dog aggression they can handle, etc. Please let her know where you are located as well. Spindletoprescue@aol.com - please put FOSTER in the subject so she can find them quickly.

Leah wanted to also point out that amidst all the organizations who are hindering efforts to help our breed, there are several who need to be commended for their help:

  1. VMAT (Veterinary Medical Assistance Teams) has been there from the beginning, and have been a huge help in her efforts to rescue pit bulls. Unfortunately they are pulling out, and that is one reason her efforts are urgent, once they are gone, she is pretty much on her own.
  2. Noah's Ark - Running the Slidell shelter- very well organized, pro-pit bull - they have several hundred pit bulls there, and doing a 90 day hold to give people time to find their pets. They are in need of volunteers to walk dogs, clean crates, etc.
  3. Best Friends- another very well organized, pro pit bull shelter in Tylertown - have about 300-400 pit bulls. Could also use volunteers.

1.) CRITICAL: DATA ENTRY PEOPLE TO UPDATE RESCUE LISTS *need fax machine

CONTACT: Alvin (at Lamar-Dixon) 225-647-3340 *Alvin is coordinating data input at Lamar-Dixon. Tell her you are responding to Jane Garrison’s alert, distributed by Brenda (Kinship Circle) on behalf of Jane.info@kinshipcircle.org

LOCATION: Work from your home.

VOLUNTEER NEEDS/SITUATION: Critical need for data entry volunteers to help update rescue lists. Jane needs data entry people who can input information, from 7pm to 1am, starting right now. You will enter data at http://www.dogdetective.com. Alvin will explain details about how to do this.

If you cannot go to LA, here is your chance for HANDS-ON HELP reuniting storm victims with their pets. I know there are people out there who can do this. Let’s not let the animals down. Many of you know who Jane Garrison is--the veteran rescuer, volunteering for HSUS on the front lines to save animals. She has sidestepped politics to plead for volunteers for hurricane animals still trapped or roaming. Today (10/1/05) I spoke with Jane at great length. I am counting on the hundreds of you who have inquired about volunteering to step forward NOW.

This is the status of Lamar-Dixon in Gonzales today: The state-designated shelter is closed. No new animal intake.

However, Jane and rescue units are still operating in full force. Animals have to be brought elsewhere. (Jane Garrison is not employed by HSUS. She is an HSUS volunteer).

Data Entry and Search/Rescue will continue from Lamar-Dixon until October 15, 2005.

New rescues brought to Winn Dixie staging area need transport/foster.

NO animals will be released from Lamar-Dixon itself.

From Petfinder

Dear Petfinder.com members,

It is important to us that you are "kept in the loop" about what Petfinder.com is doing to help pets affected by the hurricanes and to reunite them with their families. Petfinder.com President and co-Founder, Betsy Saul, wrote this to update you on the Animal Emergency Response Network, database updates, Petfinder.com Foundation efforts, foster-match successes and more:

Dear Partners,

As you know, the Animal Emergency Response Network, powered by Petfinder.com and Maddie's Fund, was developed during the initial days of Katrina to unify pet, rescue and volunteer data collected by all of the involved animal rescue organizations. Much like Petfinder.com itself, the database was developed "live" and put to the test immediately. Our programmers feverishly developed a system to receive rescued pet information and shortly after that they began feverishly enhancing the search and sort function to help folks find their pets.

Because, you -- our stakeholders, our partners in animal welfare -- are ultimately the fuel that keeps our engine going, we wanted to share some data, activities and information with you so that together we can have a better understanding of where we can help and how we can all make disaster a little less disastrous in the future.

Interesting tidbits from our database:11,318 pets in our FOUND database (these are in temporary shelters and foster homes)7,823 of the FOUND pets have a photo1,496 of 11,318 have unspecified breed3,320 FOUND pets of unspecified gender3,616 FOUND pets are female699 male pets entered as NEUTERED 25,087 PLEASE RESCUE pets (includes many duplicate postings)5,527 LOST pet postings 86 NEED HELP pets (for pets that are with evacuees)15,727 offers to VOLUNTEER14,775 offers to FOSTER (asked within the VOLUNTEER questionnaire)

This database, drawing data from hundreds of sources, is unlike normal Petfinder in that there is little standardization available when data is collected in emergency situations. When we first began receiving pet information, most of it came without data at all! For example, we received a thousand photos taken by a volunteer photographer. While the information available was incomplete, we felt we needed to show those pets to anyone who might be looking for them so that owners would know their pets had been rescued. However, we felt it would be irresponsible, during those first few weeks, to allow owners to search our database by breed or other detailed criteria, because they would not receive meaningful results; the lack of breed data meant many pets would not be included in a such a search. As our pet list grew and more complete pet info was entered, we increased the search and sort capability: we have added a breed search, a gender search, a name search and more.

Of course we still worry about someone missing a pet simply because a rescuer could not tell a flood-soaked pit bull from a flood-soaked beagle. So please shout from the rooftops that pet owners should take the time to look at every photo!

Beyond the database: During the first few days of Katrina, we reached out to over 75 animal welfare groups we feared were displaced. The results of that check in are now at http://katrina.petfinder.com/ , which has been described as the best place to get a real overview of activities and impact.

When hurricane Rita was barreling toward TX we, like you, saw on tv the thousands of evacuees in traffic jams with their families and pets not knowing where to go. We thought of the thousands of volunteer foster homes for Katrina pets in our database and we targeted radio stations along the evacuation routes with information on our call center and foster network, empowering evacuees with cell phones to access our database from their cars. We are proud to say that since Rita, about 50 people a day call our hotline at 800-485-5152 to coordinate their own pets' foster homes.

The Petfinder.com Foundation has hired four people to help make matches, offer help, and guide database users through the process of finding their pets. And, HSUS has a call center (800-Humane-1) to help guide people through the process of using our database if they need help. This week, we learned that some pet owners were getting lost in Petfinder (going to our home page and doing a Quick Search thinking they were entering the AERN database). Yikes! You will see that we now have a big red sign on our home page that points folks in the right direction.

Our Foundation has pledged $100,000 to help owners reunite with pets and we are helping Merial distribute over $500,000 in medications to affected shelters.

This is just a window into our recent activities which are a small piece of the huge (and humbling) response of the animal welfare community at large.

We are proud of the collaboration involved in our database and are honored to be the central point for the reunion of pets and their families. We especia

Subject: Dr White in New Iberia

I just want to let everyone here on this list know that Dr White, his wife, his staff and several area shelters, one in particular are doing a fantastic job. What ever rumors you have heard are untrue.

We arrived with a semi tractor trailer full of supplies at 10pm on Wednesday in New Iberia after a non stop trip from Upstate NY. Our little shelter, Beverly Animal Shelter had gathered supplies from the community and headed down on Tuesday. Dr White, his wife and staff and groups from area shelters. especially the New Iberia Humane Society all came out in force to help us unload and reload with 31 dogs. These people had lost homes, jobs and a life they once knew. They came at 10pm with little notice..they came with a smile and a welcoming hand. They also had many animals inside the vets clinic waiting to be reunited with their families..it was a humbling experience to say the least.

They jumped right up and did this back breaking work with smiles and good hearts. All for the animals...many had no home to go home to but they weren't complaining..they were helping the less fortunate that couldn't help themselves. We at Beverly Animal Shelter were just sorry our size prevented us from taking many more.

We "Northerners" have witnessed "Southern" hospitality and caring at it's greatest level. We are in fact one nation in need...it was an honor to meet these folks and to be able to offer a small bit of help. We came away with 31 dogs. Dogs that will be well cared for and held in case their owners might in fact change their minds and want them back or for the others that were just unable to take them and now are looking for them. The dogs and their pictures will be on petfinder. These dogs will also have the opportunity to learn about Northern hospitality!!

Don't be discouraged if one place doesn't need help..keep searching as there are many small shelters struggling and still need help.

While we are hearing many horrible stories, many wonderful things are also happening. Unfortunately they get less press..that is why I wanted to share our experience..one that has renewed my faith in the human race.

Thank you Dr Eric White and all that have faithfully gathered around you to help...and thanks for letting us share some of this. One small group to another..we are proud to know you!!!

Hi ...

I just got a call from Broken Down Dogs in Alexandria. The are SWAMPED. That location is being used as a staging area for dogs out of quarantine that are about to be transported to locations outside Louisiana. They need people there to photograph and document the dogs for petfinder.com. If you're tired or injured from doing rescue work, please help them! Contact is Janet Marynowski, 318-443-0081. Please also let me know that you're going there since I'm trying to coordinate help for them.

Donation Shop Ready for Visitors 18:46

THE DONATION SHOP!!
by Andelina, 10/1/05 18:46 ET

I've been working for the past two days literally non-stop (I've slept like 5 hours total) updating the KatrinaPetsNeedHelp.com Donation Shop, and I've finally finished!

COME BY FOR THE GRAND REOPENING!

100% of the profits from this shop will go to Pasado's Safe Haven.

Another NOLA poster, Roadchild, has a design business http://www.popartpets.com and was also donating some of her profits to Pasado's Safe Haven. So we joined forces in this effort, with Roadchild donating over a dozen of her really cool pop-art animal designs. They are in the spirit of Andy Warhol's pop art, VERY COOL, and will never go out of style!

PLEASE LET EVERYONE KNOW ABOUT THIS SHOP!

I would love to be able to afford proper advertising but I simply can't, so I'm relying heavily on word-of-mouth. I NEED YOUR HELP. I would so greatly appreciate anything you can do to assist with spreading the word about this shop!

THERE ARE TWO WAYS TO GET TO THE DONATION SHOP...

AFFILIATE LINK (please delete the space between cafe and press):

http://www.cafepress.com/shop/pets?pid=3502537

1) Go to the above link -- remember to delete the space between cafe and press

2) This will take you to the Cafepress Pets/Animals marketplace.

3) From there, do a search under Katrina Pets Need Help, or KatrinaPetsNeedHelp.com (no spaces), etc.

4) In the search results, look for products listed under KatrinaPetsNeedHelp.com Donation Shop, and click on the shop's name.

If you use this URL to go to Cafepress and then buy something there -- at ANY Cafepress shop -- the KatrinaPetsNeedHelp.com Donation Shop can earn up to 20% in extra commission! And that commission means more money to donate to Pasado. The main caveat of the affiliate program is that a shopkeeper (like me) cannot use the affiliate URL to link directly to their own shop, hence the slight rigamarole. But it's LITERALLY worth taking the 30 extra seconds to get there that way, especially if you think you might buy something.

And the other way to get to the Donation Shop:

DIRECT LINK (no commission): http://shop.katrinapetsneedhelp.com/

While I encourage you to use the affiliate link, regardless of which link you use, JUST PLEASE REMEMBER TO PASS THIS ON!!!! I can't do this alone!

More publicity = More buyers = More $$$ = More donations = More animals saved!

AND PLEASE KEEP BUMPING AND CROSS-POSTING THIS POST!

Thanks everyone -- you don't know how much I appreciate everything you're doing. :)

How To Help The Animals You Will See 18:41

How To Help The Animals You Will See
by muimui, 10/1/05 18:41 ET

Please help in the animal rescue effort by feeding/watering animals on the street. If you discover trapped animals in your neighborhood, please give them food and water. If you want to rescue it/them, that is even better!

Most of the dogs are not 'delerious' as the Mayor has remarked, and most dogs, when rescued, want to lick the rescuers' faces! And they have been through a lot!

If you know a neighbor had a pet, please check and see if the animal is there--ask a police officer to push in the door/window to check on the animal. Leave food and water if you can't find the pet and try again later that day. Leave food and water all over the neighborhood.

Help the limited amount of rescue workers. The majority of pets are still awaiting rescue; they are either on the streets or in the houses--yes, we have discovered animals alive after four weeks in houses! Don't assume they are dead!

And if you see an animal that appears dead, nudge it or move it a little; some have been discovered as barely alive--but alive--with this method! Feed it a little food and water, then take it to a vet or a shelter who can provide medical services!

Please do what you can; I know you have been suffering, but they have been suffering in different ways for a long time, too.

But please post as new topic this email to correct 18526, by reference.

DATED 9/30/2005

I appreciate your intentions and what you are trying to do. However, transport of animals out of our shelter needs to be very carefully coordinated. Could you please forward this message to all of those that you sent your "can you take any of these" message to. We have been inundated these last few days with groups wanting to take animals out. Actually too many! We are sending some away only partly full and two weeks from now we are going to be needing them. We are still required to hold animals for a minimum of five days. We need to stagger our transports out in a manner that accommodates our flow in. We are extremely busy and short staffed. It is difficult to do this even with lots of planning. Their consideration in this matter would be extremely helpful. There is plenty of work for all. We need transport, but we need them to contact me first so that I can coordinate everyone. This is the best way to save as many lives as possible. We still have no phone service at the shelter and Tara is swamped with other important matters. I have been assigned to take care of these matters in order to get them taken care of more quickly.

USED DOGS REALLY NEEDS HELP FOLKS...
SHIRLEY A BF POSTER HAS BEEN TRYING TO HELP
by: Shirley Mondeaux

Dear Friends,

I just spoke with Madalin Bernard (she is getting very tired, but she is a trooper and won't give up while the animals still need her help!) Please forward this to anyone that might be able to help her. Most of you have heard her story, but she has still not gotten the help that she needs and deserves for serving on the front line.

Attached are her most urgent needs. ONE OF WHICH IS CASH. I KNOW THAT MOST PEOPLE DON'T LIKE TO GIVE CASH, BUT THAT IS WHAT SHE NEEDS MORE THAN FOOD AT THIS POINT. Before she can get her kennels rebuilt, she needs money (Around $500 to pay people to help her clean up her back yard (such as tree down on kennels, fencing destroyed) as no one will help her for free! In speaking with her this morning, she has not had any physical support to help get her kennels back in action.

She has 20 dogs now and is still street feeding 20-30 instead of hundreds. Most of the others have been picked up by animal rescue groups. Her mail service is restored. However, the quickest way to get a donation to her is by her new mailto:PayPalaccountK9kitten@cox-dot-net .

She still needs to get her dogs spayed/neutered and needs 10x10 outdoor kennels desperately! She has included specific information on where to buy, etc. below. Hopefully fencing is on the way from Peace Love Pets in San Francisco.

IF YOU KNOW OF ANYONE IN THE AREA THAT COULD HELP THIS LADY GET HER YARD BACK IN SHAPE, PLEASE FORWARD ON TO THEM....SHE IS NOT ASKING FOR HELP FOR HERSELF, ONLY THE ANIMALS. SHE NEEDS PEOPLE THAT CAN GIVE HER A DAY OR TWO TO GET THIS CLEANED UP!!!! If you can open the attached pictures you will see why. (If you would like to see the pictures of the devastation and her rescues, please mailto:meatshirley_mondeaux@msn.com as they would not post.)

Thank you Shirley for your concern and all your efforts to get help for me. I really appreciate it.

Hurricane Katrina Relief Fund for RESCUED DOGS USED DOGS NEEDS HELP! I stayed behind on purpose, because I knew there would be so many animals left behind. I have gotten over 100 animals out and have kept at least 100 alive by feeding and watering them. I have climbed fences and gone into backyards in very rough parts of town, to feed and water these dogs.

I NEED HELP! My most urgent needs at this time are:

10x10 OUTDOOR PANEL KENNELS ( Heavy Duty ones would be great, But Lowe's sells 10x10 x 6 feet high 4 Panel kennels for $198.00 that would do... You could call my local Lowe's at 504-227-0495 and purchase one for delivery. Ask for Randy, Mike or Joe and tell them Gwen said there are 4 such kennels #92199 at the supplier)

FENCE REPAIR,

My source of donations and income from dog related activities here is essentially over, due to the fact that almost everyone lost everything or has not a job any longer etc etc,.....

Because I chose not to evacuate and stay behind in unbearable heat and no electricity for over 3 weeks in order to keep hundreds of dogs from dying ( and keeping them out of the way of those who came to help and rescue people) makes me ineligible for the immediate FEMA relief money.

I am exhausted and broke. But I made a Huge difference. Many of the dogs I kept alive and evacuated are on my Petfinder Site.( http://www.petfinder.com/shelters/useddogs.html ) although I am still too busy with daily dog care to have gotten them all up.

Can't handle pallets of food . Have no one to unload. Just me. And I can't take too much food in bags at one time, as I live near river and easily get a rat problem. And although, I prefer feeding my own dogs mostly dry, I don't have enough rat proof storage for a lot of dry for the all the dogs I am feeding. Wet in cans would be better. Also it seems to be easier, to the ones on the street, to find the food I leave out before the insects if it has the enticing odor of canned wet food. So much of the dry food I see left out is wet and covered with ants, while the wet food gets eaten. And at this time I have 5 Ex Large metal containers full and 8 LARGE bags of dry dog food.

Donations can be sent to:

USED DOGS
P.O. Box 741163
New Orleans, LA 70174

OR

the mailto:USEDDOGSk9kitten@cox-dot-net PayPal account

OR you can donate directly to

  • ABADIE VETERINARY HOSPITAL- 504-737-8910
  • ALGIERS ANIMAL CLINIC AND HOSPITAL- 504-364-1556.

If you send to the vets, please send only $50 or $100 or more, because I don't want to bother them with lots of calls. I would appreciate donations of any size, it is just that the smaller ones should probably be sent to me thru the mail or thru PAyPAl. ( I got my very first piece of mail in 31 days today!!!!!)

Please make sure and tell the vets to apply your donation ... (message truncated)

URGENT: Eric - in New Orleans 13:36

URGENT: Eric - in New Orleans - update as of 1 pm EST

I talked briefly with Eric a few minutes ago. He says that his team are still getting animals out of homes (per peoples' requests) - ALIVE. However, they are also finding some that have not survived. He says just today that they found a tinyYorkie and a couple of Poodles that are weak but should make it, and a young pregnant Lab. Some people left food for their pets when they left which has enabled some to hang on longer.

Eric's voice cracked as I was talking to him. I could hear the emotion in his voice. His team have saved a lot of animals that were left locked in homes when people evacuated. But he says there are just too many - a list of about 2,000 homes that have not yet been reached. More people are needed....not next week....NOW.

He also says he feels that people that have wanted to help have not come because of all the conflicting reports. Each day that there is not enough help...more die. Eric gave me no particular message, no advice to anyone, just told me what the current situation is.

It is unclear just what the "authorities" are doing. Residents are being allowed back into parts of the city and hopefully some of the animals still running loose that have been having food and water left for them will be found and taken care of. It was posted a few days ago that the LA State Vet intended to stop rescue efforts as of YESTERDAY. I have no source for an "official" statement on how it is today.

This past Thursday, Sept. 29 - from a news report ......"The National Guard will begin escorting animal rescue crews into abandoned homes to retrieve pets left behind by people who evacuated from Gulf Coast hurricanes, Sen. John Ensign said Wednesday after returning from the region. The Nevada Republican, a licensed veterinarian, said he secured the arrangement while visiting Louisiana and meeting with rescue leaders. Coast Guard Vice Admiral Thad Allen, head of the hurricane recovery efforts, plans to name a point person this week to coordinate animal rescue efforts, Ensign said. "There has not been somebody to coordinate the effort to go in and get the animals," (Source: http://www.reviewjournal.com/lvrj_home/2005/Sep-29-Thu-2005/news/3594736.html )

Appointing someone "this week"...whenever that is....is letting more animals die each day. I cannot believe all of the red tape, power struggles, greed, arrogance, and politics (and atrocities - to be discussed later) since Katrina hit that has caused the suffering and death of so many innocent animals. It has been over a month. "Too little, too late"

Read Eric's blog for his statement yesterday which begins " I am telling you this place is just nuts. Some body from Homeland Security just came by and she got me into the mayor's conference. FBI, ATF, the National Guard, all sorts of security seemingly not knowing who was protecting who and none of them really seemed to care." Read the rest at http://www.ericsdogblog.com/

Can anyone go help? I personally will pay for the gasoline for 2 vehicles.

Eric asked me to call him again about 8 p.m. this evening and I would like to have some good news for him - that some authority is actually doing something or that help is on the way somehow...

Sue has done a really wonderful job taking and posting the pics of the new animals at Roicy. This is a tough job, and takes several hours to finish, so we are very appreciative. Regarding the animals from last week, Golden Beginnings from Houston pulled the Golden, and I think Project Halo(the group from North Carolina working in Gulfport) took everything that was not pulled or adopted. Unfortunately, there is another group of really wonderful animals with only days left. They will hold over if there is space, but I am most concerned for the Labs. My heart belongs to them, especially the black ones....have pulled several for Bert in New Orleans and they have all been outstanding. The black ones almost always get passed over by the public....they might as well be invisible. Most of those who used to pull the Labs have either moved, or been displaced due to Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. Their adoption rate at Roicy is not the greatest. Golden Beginnings is aware of the dog listed as a Golden mix....looks like a young purebred to me from the pic.

If you are an individual from out of town wanting to adopt a Roicy animal, your best bet is to work thru a rescue group....Roicy does not have staff or volunteers to ship the animal to you, and adoptions must be done in person. Most of the local rescues are way past full, so it would not hurt to offer a nice donation for boarding/vetting etc, in addition to the adoption fee. And please understand if they cannot help you....they wake up to animals dumped in their yards more times than not, and are ALWAYS over extended and under funded....and the hurricanes have created a tremendous burden for all of them. To those from out of state new to rescue who are not familiar with shelter animals from the deep South....pretty much count on the dog being heartworm positive if over a year. You may luck out on the owner surrenders...especially Dakota who is listed as being up to date on his shots....hopefully Heartguard, too. Our rescue price for treatment is around $120 - 200....you could pay hundreds more where you are. The dog will have to remain quiet for a month or more following treatment. The young ones who are light positive are sometimes treated by putting on Heartguard only...but don't count on it. Also, theymight be full of worms, and possibly come down with kennel cough from the stress and exposure to all the other dogs.....all very fixable, but these are rescues who have been thru a lot. But.....ask anyone who has adopted a Roicy animal....not a looser in the bunch temperament-wise.

Roicy does not hold and does not take credit cards....is a police run, rabies control facility not an adoption facility. And please do not call over there and scream at them.....the shelter personnel have nothing to do with the policies...that is Lafayette Consolidated Government, the police department and the city council.....but the real blame belongs to a public who for the most part refuses to spay/neuter so that the number of unwanted animals here is beyond comprehension. They get a large volume of calls, some really ugly, from all over the country, and those who do that mean well, but are putting rescue groups who regularly work with Roicy in danger of being shut out. Regarding the Petfinder site, the shelter has nothing to do with it....done by a very few volunteers. I continue to be amazed at those of you from throughout the US and Canada who care so much about our animals. In many cases, you have been their only hope and we thank you.

Subject: ROICY PICS Are Up (Louisiana)

The pictures taken today (Friday, Sept 30th) at Roicy Duhon Animal Control Center in Lafayette, LA are now posted.

There are currently ten dogs, four of which are still pups. My favorite would have to be the young Tuxedo Labrador Retriever mix. There are quite a few Lab and Lab mix right now. My kids went with me, and their favorite was the little Beggar puppy that they have labeled as Lab/Hound mix, but looks more like a beagle mix to me (but then again I am a cat person and don't know dog breeds as well). The minute my kids went in, he stood up on his hind legs begging for attention. "Charlie" is a beautiful Chocolate Labrador Retriever, but he has a few thin and balding patches on his fur that may need medical attention. Charlie is a very intelligent and lovable dog. There is also a Blue Heeler, a Beagle, and a Golden Retriever.

There are currently four adult cats, and ten little kittens. The adult Siamese and 5 other cats/kittens are Katrina evacuees from New Orleans. The paper for the Siamese female said she and 5 others were left by evacuees who are not coming back for them. I am not sure which of the other cats/kittens also came from New Orleans. I would assume the litter with the 3 Siamese snowshoe kittens and the black and white tuxedo kitten may be evacuees from New Orleans, since the Siamese has obviously weaned kittens recently.

This communication provided by Hugs for Homeless Animals You have received this message as part of our OFTAnet Assistance Program to our shelter network.

There is an urgent need to move 80 dogs and 50 cats out of the Southeastern Louisiana area. A previously scheduled air transport has failed to take place and these adoptable (not hurricane rescue) animals are now left in a situation that will end in their euthanasia if they are not moved out immediately.

If you can take in these animals and/or have a means of transport and/or know of someone who can help transport (ground, preferably) please contact Marie Boussard from the St. Martin Humane Society either by telephone: 337-879-6600 or 337-277-9538 or by email as soon as possible.

Carriers are provided. Transportation and a destination is what is needed immediately. TIME IS OF THE ESSENCE.

Best wishes,

Have time to drive for transport but gas money and possible vehicle

I made a trip last week to take supplies up that was pretty expensive (close to $400.00). I don't have a van or SUV, but if anyone needs a driver, I have the time to do transport just not the funds. I can take care of myself (food, shelter etc) I just would need gas and vehicle unless my Camry or Ford F150 would do...

Thought I would put this out in case I can be of use.

Galveston: Katrina and Rita Animals for Adoption and Rescue Groups 01:57

Katrina and Rita Animals for Adoption and Rescue Groups
..Ready now. Don't let PTS

I want everyone to know that the main reason these animals need rescuing whether from rescue groups or individual adopters, is that Galveston County Animal Shelter like many others nationwide do and will have to euthanize animals that continue to be owner turn ins.

These are wonderful people who want to rheum as many as possible, but they are over crowded now, and with 200 next week coming in, and who knows what will be the numbers the following weeks to come. So unfortunately will have to make hard decisions that they do not want to do, but cannot house or care for so many animals. All are Hurricane Katrina and Rita animals and will not be having owners who will be coming back for them, unfortunately.

I heard their plea and that is how I became involved in this, and what touched me is how the staff at GCAS expressed the worry and concern of having to be PTS these animals. These animals by no choice of their own or even their former owners had a better choice. I care not to judge anyone on their decisions. When there is an estimate 355,000 evacuees in Texas alone and all now relocated here and there throughout the US and no homes for themselves.

The Rita animals are also being turned in at a daily rate. GCAS is not a huge private funded shelter and does not have the means nor staff at this time to be able to indefinitely hold and try to place every animal. So as long as their need is great, and these too, Hurricane animals need help. I will assist and as already demonstrated just today, many others are trying to help by adopting or the rescues taking what they can. I express great appreciation to those, and to the ones who even took the old and blind ones. We as an animal loving nation can make a difference one by one.

Please do contact the GCAS at 409-948-2485 ask for ALEXIS or Michelle. Very friendly people and they too want the best for the many animals here now and to come over time. Keep checking back with them also, as others keep arriving. Any questions, any help needed, email me mailto:ksarahsmals@aol-dot-com

PERMISSION TO CROSSPOST TO ALL LISTS AND BOARDS..PLEASE

Thank You and the Hurricane(s) Animals Thank You

Galveston county animals are turn ins!

The Galveston County Animals are all Owner Turn Ins...People forget that there is 355,000 plus evacuees now in Texas, almost all homeless and can not keep their animals...Also many are newly Rita turn ins...none are lost, strays, etc....So know the difference when shelters in texas have been dumped on and keep getting more weekly and daily.....
