My Experience at Gozales...A call for VOLUNTEERS
09/21/05 4:50PM My Experience at Gozales...A call for VOLUNTEERS From: Sheila Mahon mailto:sheilamahon22@yahoo-dot-com
Hi All,
I am about to go home so will not have email till tomorrow but wanted to get this out ASAP.
First I want to thank Adela for sponsoring me. Due to my financial situation I would not have been able to go down and help the animals. THANK YOU ADELA. I will carry this rewarding experience with me always. I will always see all those innocent eyes looking at me with love an gratitude as I walked them, feed them, washed them. They are so full of love.
I also want to make this point before continuing, not to brag or pat myself on the back but to let peolpe know that even tho the work is hard, just about anyone can still make a contribution. I am not a well person, I have to herniated discs in my back, need knee replacements on both knees, have asthma, anemia, etc. I walked dogs for 4 hours straight, from 8-12 then I took a lunch break and went back to work cleaning cages for several hours, ate dinner and walked dogs till till 8 or 9PM. Yes I was exhausted but I was able to do it. Of course everyone is different but this is to say not every physical "handicap" should get in the way of people volunteering, also if you feel unfit but want to hlep, you can work with the cats or small animals or just feed and water....EVERYONE CAN DO SOMETING. NOTHING IS TOO SMALL . Alos, they DO ENCOURAGE people to take breaks as needed. I pushed myself ONLY because there were not enuf people to the work....the more people there are, the less work an individual has to do. PLEASE, if you can help, HELP, don't make excuses.
WHAT IS NEEDED FOR THE ANIMALS
They DON'T NEED food donations. THEY NEED PEOPLE, PEOPLE, PEOPLE. THEY NEED VETS and VET TECHS
Astonishingly, the animals are still alive, they have suffered thru 3 weeks with no food or water in the most brutal heat*It is now the 11th hour though and NOW they WILL start to die. And the reason will be LACK OF VOLUNTEERS. The govt and society in general, has let the animals down. But if the rescue community does not come forward, they have let the animals down even more. I know not everybody will be able to go, but those that can, MUST. Those that can, STOP MAKING EXCUSES. There is no reason for excuses as you will see below.
If you plan to go out on rescue this is what is needed: Large air-conditioned vehicles in which animals can be transported as well as food and water, because when you go out in the AM you must take a supply of food and water for the animals as well as for yourself. If you don't have such a vehicle don't let it stop you, you can still team up with a group. But the more vehicles, the more groups can go out.
- Some gear you will need:
- thick "bite-proof" work gloves or at the very least heavy kitchen rubber gloves
- sturdy, waterproof (rubber) work boots/shoes, at least ankle high
- waders
- long sleeve shirts - for rescuers
- long pants- for rescuers
- belt (to hang gear/supplies from)
- mouth coverings (surgical masks, bandannas)
- eye protection (sunglasses)
- flashlights, crow bars/axes etc for breaking into houses
- Possibly containers full of gasoline in case you run out of gas on a rescue, I don't think there are operational gas stations in N. O. (not sure)
- maps of New Orleans
- spray paint, for marking and dating houses with food and water drop dates (what you did at the house)You will be briefed each AM before going out and set up in teams of 3-4 people.
- AT LAMAR
- They need VETS, VET TECHS AND EVERY able bodied person they can get. Volunteers are desperately needed to clean shelter cages, walk dogs, feed and water all animals. They also need people who are experienced in handling "aggressives". I was not so if I saw a dog with no food or water in cage marked "aggressive" , I was not allowed to go in...I had to wait till an available person was able to take of the animal...it's too hot to make the animals wait for water or a walk, or whatever it is they might need.
- They have mostly dogs there, but a lot of cats, some exotic Birds, snakes, lizards, turtles, rabbits, horses, pot bellied pigs, chickens, etc. NOTE: Most of the dogs there are Pits and Rotties. MOST of them have not been fixed and the females seem to be used for breeding. I was told that dog fighting is a "cottage" industry in the 9th District of N.O. I was told that approx 70 pits have been stolen and while I was there, a Rottie was stolen. BE ON THE LOOK OUT. I NEVER LET A PERSON LOOKING FOR THEIR PET GO UNATTENED. If you see something you think is suspicious, call one of the Barn Managers. BETTER TO ACT SAFELY ON BEHALF OF THE ANIMAL*.Any one stealing a dog is obviously not doing so to give the animal a loving home.
- THIS IS WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT FOR YOUR SELF
- I spent 4 days at Gonzales so I am not an expert on everything that is taking place. I can only give you my honest observations. IT IS SAFE. We drove from NYC thru Kentucky to Mississippi to Louisiana and had absolutely no trouble at all. Upon Arriving in Gonzales, at the Lamar Dixon Equestrian Center, we had no trouble getting in, we just said we were invited by the LA SPCA and they let us in no questions asked. YOU WILL NOT BE TURNED AWAY There are police, army personnel, etc for your security. I never felt unsafe.
- You do not have to be self sufficient, as we were led to believe. We spent a lot of $$ on food, water, supplies, etc, only to find everything was provided there. They have a huge, air conditioned "tent" with army cots, but you can come in an RV or bring your own tent and camp on the grounds. They provide bottled water, Gatorade, soda, juice, 2 hot meals a day, both veg and non veg, plus snacks, granola bars, cereal, various canned foods, PB&J etc. They have a medical tent on site. They have sun-block, hand sanitizers, latex gloves etc. If you want to bring stuff any way, no problem. There are showers, toilets, laundry facilities etc. They really treat the volunteers well and with respect. They really do value our contribution.
- It would be wise to get current Hepatitis vaccinations & current Tetanus shot.
- I got this from her e-mail and am passing it on. Anyone needing more detailed info can call Kate. She is happy to provide guidance for anybody ready to go. Her number is: 415-459-1149
- If I think of anything else, I'll let you know any questions let me know. Hope I can answer them.

Are you in/near Galveston? A kennel needs help evacuating animals
Date: Wed, 21 Sep 2005 20:55:57 -0000 From: "babaluwoman" mailto:sandiegolass1@hotmail-dot-com Are you in/near Galveston? A kennel needs help evacuating animals
The situation below is unbelievable - does anyone have an SUV (or a mere car) who could help transport leashed and muzzled dogs - dogs don't necessarily have to be crated to be evacuated!!!
Crossposting:
Original message: Desperate Situation for Boarding Kennel at 13720 Stewart Road Galveston TX 77554 (FM 3005) close to ocean NO SEAWALL to protect them aprox 55 dogs and cats are being left behind they do not have crates or transport !......to get them out, they WILL be the first to die. All doors left unlocked dogs in/out runs.
UPDATE: CROSSPOSTED spoke to this lady after someone finally posted the correct name of the Kennel. They still don't have help, no crates, etc. She has talked to SPCA, but no one has come through for them yet. Suggested that they load the kittens in cardboard boxes, etc. and just get them off the island and we could get help to them...time is running out.
Her phone number is 409-744-2476, name is Tanya Fabian...30 dogs 20 cats...some are Katrina survivors!!!
If you can get her help, call her right away. My number is 215-322-9875
Just sent to Gianna, but can anyone else get crates to her...they have to evacuate before 6:00 Texas time!!!
MY COMMENT
I cannot believe they were planning on leaving the animals simply because of no crates. I would have filled up a number of SUV with loose dogs, on leashes and muzzled. Cats could go in crates, several to a crate if necessary. Surely a boarding kennel has SOME crates around the place????
At 10 - 11 animals per SUV, 5 would do it. Get them to a safer place and then worry about crates.

Let's be ready for next time
Date: Wed, 21 Sep 2005 16:24:53 -0400 From: "MaryAnn" mailto:mgibson3@columbus.rr-dot-com Subject: Let's be ready for next time (long)
Hi everyone,
This list seemed like a good place to start so here's what I'm willing, ready and hopefully able to do.
But first why I'm doing it.
I just came home from spending a week in New Orleans; I worked at the only shelter on the ground, with-in the city. I'm originally a "human" Search and Rescue K-9 Handler, but since my team didn't get called out, I volunteered to go down and help all of those poor desperate animals.
The work was grueling; we had no electricity, no safe water except bottled and limited supplies. Most days there were only 5 of us, we never had time to stop or sit. The first day we had National Guard to protect us. After that they were recalled and we'd sit, awake, long into the night; 5 women alone in the dark, watching, worrying, hoping to guard our innocent furry, disaster victims and praying we'd be safe.
The shelter and SAR work was set up by a couple of girls in their 20's, who came to New Orleans with nothing to start with but a tent and a lot of heart. They were smart and strong and soon we had supplies, a building for the sick, the small, the exotics and the kitties. I hooked up with them and some other volunteers. We worked long and hard and managed to send to shelters several hundred dogs, 50 to 100 cats, some birds, a guinea pig, 2 turtles and 1 fish.
Here's a hard fact, there was no way that those animals could be, or should be kept in the city. The shelters were inadequate and overwhelmed. I suspect each shelter was forced to function as a triage: stabilize, feed, water, and then get them out of the filth and disease to a real shelter that could provide adequate care.
It had to be up to each group to keep records of where each animal went and make sure they all were posted on Pet Finder. It was the only way; there was just too much need and too few exhausted people.
Records and photos were kept by our Vet Tech and all animals will be posted on Pet Finder.
Some of those animals arrived in such distress that it was clear that years of abuse had preceded the hurricane, I admit it, I hope they never are returned to their evil and cruel owners. Some came grieving for their owners; I just pray they can go home soon. Some we couldn't catch because they were traumatized and some we couldn't catch because they had learned long before that nothing good ever came from a human.
It was overwhelming, exhausting and the most rewarding work I've ever done. Each animal saved was a gift from god.
I came home yesterday and my father died last night.
This has changed me and I know my life will never be the same. I feel I must do something to help, I feel I've been directed toward Disaster Relief.
I see clearly that there is a 'disaster relief need' that the few organizations now trained to do it, can't possibly handle the current need, it's just too big. And won't be able to handle the increased need in the future. But we can all help with that.
Here's where I want to start.
Many of us have come together through Katrina lists like this, we are communicating in a way we never have before. We need to stay in touch.
We need to be ready for Rita and all the disasters to come.
The Science behind the need.
The relatively calm cycle for hurricanes that we've enjoyed in our life times is over; a more active cycle has begun. Global warming will make this cycle change even more severe. It will lead to more intense, erratic and severe weather all over America and during every season of the year. This is science, this is fact. Just look it up. I have no political agenda; and absolutely no interest in making this a part of anything political, ever.
Scientists have studied this through historic records and through scientific process. The scientific community is very concerned and is currently warning us to be prepared, so that we can survive. On the Science channel I saw one respected scientist almost in tears as he related this message.
If we are prepared we can stop the pet tragedy that we all saw in New Orleans from ever happening again. I want us to be ready: trained, fully equipped, and ready to deploy rapidly, maybe someday soon we'll be able to be in place in advance just like the human rescuers.
First: If you're willing to help, please send me your info and (with their permission,) various contact's and their information.
That would be names, numbers, emails, and skills.
I am creating a database that will put all of us in touch with who and what we need, when we need it.
All Information is Strictly Confidential and will never be sold, or given to anyone for any reason, except to each of us, to help god's most innocent creatures.
You may Always Withdraw your Information, at Any Time, and I will completely delete all of it.
I have long term goals that include:
- Finding the experts, the folks with experience and letting them not only do their jobs and hopefully let us helping them, but to ask them to teach us as well.
- Helping me learning as much as I can, so I can do a better job.
- Helping us all learn as much as we can by; planning and presenting seminars on disaster relief, Incident Command Structure and many, many other topics. (Suggestions please) I'd like to find the best instructors and give us all a time and place to learn from them.
- I have an idea for a longer time frame that may lead to the formation, training, and fully equipping teams that are ready to deploy.
- I may even have a line on a financial backer.
Why me? Maybe just because I am willing.
- I have no other agenda and no desire to profit from this. Do Not Send Money, Ever!
- If I ever ask (say I go nut or something :-) take your people, your contacts, your training and go. Because I've lost the mission.
- I've been in dogs: conformation, obedience, agility and Search and Rescue for almost 25 years. I'm from Columbus Ohio and lots of dog people know me, I'm happy to be checked out, I have nothing to hide.
Let's start this hopeful and admittedly long term (5 years or less I hope) plan just by getting in contact with each other.
Once I have the database made you can contact me, or perhaps we'll set it up so we can access it on a closed / member login web site (I want to keep all of our info private from the bad guys out there.)
And please if you're already doing this, email me, I'll help you. No need to do what's already done. And suggestions are welcome, experts come on out!
Very Sincerely,
MaryAnn Gibson
