Notes From The Field, Debra Barlow

Well, the winter months are almost over for our southern neighbors and the grand tale of the spring grasses coming back is in a report I just received today that was presented at the La Veterinary Medical Association's 2006 Winter Meeting. The report is on the effects of 2005 Storms on Louisiana Forage Resource. According to the report on soil samples taken, here are the important FACTS. This is FYI so you will know what is going on in the areas in one area in question. For Vermillion Parish below is the information I have gathered from the report .
Ryegrass experiment = soil was sampled and ryegrass strips planted at six locations in Vermillion Parish on October 18. Locations and results below:
Vermillion Salt Results: Location Salt 10/18 Salt 12/21 Erath 2211 1427 Henry 2611 972 Esther 2918 2675 Forked Island A 3622 1236 Little Prairie 2624 1345 Forked Island B 2918 1582
A major factor on whether their will be a problem with salt in the hayfields and pastures depends on these factors:
Salinity of the flood water, depth and duration of the flood, moisture condition of the soil prior to flooding, and soil drainage. Ground should NOT be tilled. You are just turning the salt under to come back up. Irrigation should be done to let the rains wash off the salt content. Rainfall will reduce salt content by 50%. Flushing or irrigating fields with fresh water may help to leach salt out of the root zone. Carpetgrass, bermuda, and rye grass are tolerant of salt. Bahiagrass and dallisgrass will also be tolerant. Species to avoid will be alfalfa, tall fescue, and timothy. Bottom line of the report is that bermuda grass pastures and hayfields should recover from the storms. How fast the recovery is depends on the rainfall.
For those in these areas, LSU said it is minimal charge of $5 to free to have samples tested of your fields, and they encourage you to bring samples to aid in their next report. Leaching is the basic management tool for controlling salinity. A 5 inch rainfall will remove about 50% of the salt in the root zone. This report was done by Ed Twidwell, PHD, was born and raised on a livestock and grain farm in northeast Kansas. He attended KSU and recieved a B.S.. in agronomy. He then attended Purdue University where he received a MS and Ph.D. degrees in agronomy. He was the Extension Forage Specialist at South Dakota State University from 1987-1995. He moved to Louisiana in 1995 to become the Extension Forage Specialist at LSU. He has served in that position since then. His primary focus is to provide educational programs dealing with forage crops to the citizens of Louisiana.

Animal Aid for Vermilion Area, Incorporated, is a 501(c)(3), helping the people and animals of south Vermilion Parish areas and its neighbors: Cow Island, Forked Island, Pecan Island, Esther and InterCoastal City.
"We're a small, local pet rescue group in rural, far southwestern Louisiana. In 'normal' times we rescue, rehabilitate, investigate cruelty, foster, adopt, educate, spay/neuter, and maintain a sanctuary for old, unadoptable, and abused pets. Since the arrival of hurricane Rita, we are also running an emergency feeding program for 400 horses and over 2600 cows. In addition, due to limited housing options, we are experiencing a surprisingly large number of relinquished pets. These new responsibilities are in addition to our normal pre-hurricane duties. Yep, we're busy!
The people of this area lost EVERYTHING in their homes, barns, and tack rooms to the storm surge. Fences are gone, too. They are now struggling to care for their animals and their families; we're trying to help in any way we can." -- Vermilion Animal Aid

Best Friends Animal Society's Proposal to Rescuers and Dog Trainers

BEST FRIENDS ANIMAL SOCIETY's proposal is below.
TO ALL rescuers and trainers out there, they are looking for help and will pay for it:

Saving the Dogs of Hurricane Katrina
We are now in the closing stages of the Best Friends rescue operation in New Orleans and along the Gulf Coast.
SO FAR: About 4,000 rescued, hundreds reunited with their families, most of the rest in foster/adoption homes or in the care of humane groups around the country. This past weekend, we held a Best Friends Super Adoption in New Orleans, including homeless pets from humane groups and animal control shelters throughout the region. Over 100 dogs and cats were adopted into good homes.
STILL TO GO: There remain about 60 needing special care. And we are turning to you - the nation's top trainers and rescue groups who are the most qualified to help them.
Mostly, these are dogs challenged with social skills who cannot be placed directly into your average family home. They are healthy and, in the right hands, good natured. And we will not allow them to be killed simply because there are too many of them and because people may be afraid of them. That would violate our basic no-kill philosophy.
So we are asking any and all of you who have the appropriate expertise to join with us in saving them, working with them, and preparing them for good permanent homes.
HOW YOU CAN HELP: You who work with special needs dogs are the special forces of animal rescue, and these dogs who suffered most dreadfully in the wake of the hurricane need your help most urgently.
(Frankly, for some of them, from what we have seen, the hurricane was even a blessing in disguise, in that it freed them from an already abusive situation.)
We know that caring for them and giving them the training they need will take time and expense, so here is our proposal:
THE PLAN
1. Come down to the Best Friends rescue center at Tylertown, outside of New Orleans. Best Friends will pay for your travel and accommodation.
2. We will introduce you to the dogs, help you select one or more whom you feel you can work with, and send them back with you. For groups taking five or more dogs, we will provide the additional transport.
3. Once they are in your care, we will provide $1,000 per dog upfront to cover any medical costs or other special care needs. After that, we will cover any continuing medical costs up until the time of their adoption.
4. We will also showcase the great work you are doing - on the Best Friends website, by gettiing word out across the Internet and through local or national media wherever possible and appropriate. We want the world to know about the work you are doing for these much maligned dogs.
We know that with good, patient care, these dogs can be saved. Many can be placed in good homes. And the idea of them being destroyed after all they have been through and after all the work that's been put into rescuing and caring for them by heroic volunteers, is just unimaginable. So, if you are an experienced dog handler who knows that firm direction, love and kindness can turn a dog around, please go to the Adoption tab at http://network.bestfriends.org/Campaigns/TrainerTab.aspx to help.

Please forward this to everyone you know:
Below is a message telling just how bad things really are for the animals in New Orleans. And not just here - there are many miles of surrounding areas where pets and animals are not being fed/watered at all, due to a lack of volunteers.
Under the message is info on two groups that send convoys to feed horses, livestock, etc., in different parts of Vermilion Parish. Note their web sites for info on donating food for livestock and supplies, plus dog and cat food - there is a great need for it. --In addition, note the drop-off points for donations in Mississippi (also hit hard by Katrina), and in Harahan at ARNO, just outside of New Orleans. (ARNO just needs donations of dog and cat food.)
The media has dropped this story like a hot potato, so please publicize it any way you can.
Thanks!
PLEASE CROSSPOST FAR AND WIDE ---- *** URGENT ***
THE STARVING ANIMALS OF HURRICANE KATRINA
NEED YOU NOW
Today in New Orleans, we had ONLY FIVE PEOPLE to feed the THOUSANDS of Katrina animals who remain on the streets. These animals are trying to stay alive long enough for their people to return or to be rescued.
Animal Rescue New Orleans: http://www.animalrescueneworleans.com/ has mapped OVER 2,800 Food/Water locations that need to be refilled !! MOST Food/Water stations are not refilled for over a WEEK because we don't have enough people to feed the animals.
It is desperate down here. The animals are starving again. Two more emaciated dogs came in.
If you can't go yourself, then help spread the word that we need more volunteers.
If you go down to help support ARNO's Food/Water program, don't let ANYTHING or ANYONE stand in your way. Please don't stay at the shelter --GO OUT AND FEED THE ANIMALS THAT HAVE NOT YET BEEN RESCUED. The animals NOT in the shelter need you MORE than the animals in the shelter. The shelter animals are fed every day -- but the thousands of animals on the street may eat ONLY ONCE A WEEK !! The animals need you to go work hard to get them fed -- to work a 12-14 hour day -- to refill over 100 Food/Water stations a day. We used to keep them well-fed. Now we are struggling just to keep them ALIVE. For more information on how to help the thousands of Katrina animals, visit the Animal Rescue New Orleans Website: http://www.animalrescueneworleans.com/
