Roicy Update

Date: Tue, 31 Jan 2006 08:53:06 -0600
From: "Debbie" <rescuerealtor @cox .net>
Subject: Proof of alter and rabies vac Roicy/Lafayette, LA

Just a reminder, if you have pulled animals from Roicy Duhon Animal Control Center in Lafayette, LA since 1/1/06, it is necessary to send proof of alter and rabies vac to Virginia Lee within 30 days. If the surgery was delayed because the animal was sick or the vet who discounts you could not get you on the books, just have him or her write a statement saying that, and follow up with proof a little later. Failure to do this will result in your org no longer being able to pull, and will reflect poorly on all rescue. Please try and state the date pulled, and animal description. If pulled by a search and rescue org and transferred, please have the receiving org do this, but state who initially pulled the animal. A copy of your chip receipt would be great. It could really hurt all rescue if orgs fail to do this.

Roicy has received about 12 Karanda beds so far. It is especially wonderful to see the little babies off the floor. They are bright blue, so they also help the black dogs to show up more. I think this will start to make a difference in the health of the animals, but we need ALL animals off the floor. So please, if you can, donate a Karanda bed to Roicy. It is listed as Lafayette Animal Control Center. All sizes are needed. The largest size is only $54 plus tax. They are selling these at just about wholesale if you are donating to a shelter.

http://www.kuranda.com/shop/donate.asp

Thanks again to all who worked so hard yesterday to get the word out about Roicy. All adoptable animals were either adopted or rescued!

Missy has posted pics. Please take a look and see if you can help anybody. There are lots of very adoptable little dogs and pups. Also, some really great cats! Deadline will be 5 PM, Thursday, Feb. 2. They can hold some over if there is space, but stray hold is usually pretty full so we need to try and get them ALL out. Remember, rescue can pull anytime, but MUST be there before 3 PM. Also spay/neuter policy, adoption policy and 501(3)(c) letter, and who will be pulling for you must be faxed in advance to Virginia at 337-291-7051. The chip fee is $13 per animal. You are required to have the animals vaccinated for rabies within 72 yrs, and to send proof to the shelter of rabies and spay/neuter within 30 days. I know that individuals out of state are forwarded these posts....please, while your concern is very much appreciated, the volume of phone calls being received handled by one person is overwhelming. The shelter cannot hold the animal for you to arrange transport, ship the animal for you, charge to your credit card till you can figure it out, etc. Also, calling to check if an animal is safe because you are curious ties up the phones so that rescues who ARE in a position to get to the shelter cannot get through. Check the petfinder site....the shelter tries to let me know when an animal is rescued or adopted....it gets busy and if I am out showing property I might not update it, but please check the petfinder site instead of calling. If you do have connections with a rescue group who might be able to make a place for a few of these, and are within a few hours of Lafayette, PLEASE forward to them.

The puppies are starting to come in and we really need more beds. Please consider donating a Kuranda bed ASAP....all sizes needed. Not only do they help the dogs to stay off the concrete, but it helps the black dogs to show up better. Roicy is listed as Lafayette Animal Control Center. They have received 12 beds so far, which is great, but many more are needed. The largest is only $54 plus tax.

just to let everybody know it is very counterproductive to call roicy shelter if you cannot go there and rescue at the deadlines of 3 pm mon/thurs. i cannot stress this enough. it actually endangers the animals and rescuers' relationship with the officials..so please, if you want a particular dog, go and get it, and if you want to rescue whoever is in danger at the last minute sometime, or always, email me off list ANY TIME and i will be happy to share my resources, as i have just done a 2 week run doing just that...put 'i want to help with roicy now' in heading...thank you all for meaning well. let's STRATEGIZE though...saskia in calif

p.s. anyone near bay area want to help me process these 10 or so dogs to a perfect home? can use LOTS OF HELP IN ANY WAY...

Hurricane Katrina Chat - Biloxi

Subject: Hurricane Katrina Chat

Meg and all Rescuers,

We welcome your help in Biloxi. Right now we only have one person on the ground doing the watering and feeding. Go to http://www.triplerpets.org/ to fill out a volunteer survey and to read about the volunteeer options. If you have contacts with your local shelters and they are able to help with placement of dogs and cats, that is also HUGE! Triple R can help with your transport costs and can get free heartworm treatment. We are working on a transport out of the region mid-February.

Thanks!

Yes, you can contact Tara if you want to work at HSSM, and I did that when I was down there as well. Michelle is great to work with when organizing transport. We work closely with HSSM. If you want to be involved on the street with a water/feed program and with delivering supplies to some of the outlying towns, as well as relocation/reunification please contact us at http://www.triplerpets.org/ . The hotline number is 228-238-2465.

http://www.hssm.org/ This is the website for Humane Society of South Mississippi and they basically run a shelter for the gulf coast. They are VERY small and their location stinks but its all they have for now. They have been trying to relocate for years but have not been able to do it yet. They are located between the sewage plant and the golf course. If your down there when I am I can meet up with you and take you right to it.

Humane Society of Louisiana is a 501c3 nonprofit currently caring for Katrina¹s displaced companion animals.

The Humane Society of Louisiana¹s temporary shelter in Tylertown, MS is sorely understaffed! On January 18, just ONE person tended to 47 dogs and 36 cats. A camper is situated on-site for volunteers to sleep in. Plan to travel self-sufficient.

With no sanctuary to return to in New Orleans, the HSLA will continue to be based out of "Camp Katrina" in Tylertown, Mississippi, for at least the next few months. As the nation's attention turns from the aftermath of Katrina and Rita, our numbers of volunteers have correspondingly dwindled. Please, make no mistake about it! Help is still urgently needed!

1/30/06--ARNO UPDATE: New Location & Future Plans

http://www.AnimalRescueNewOrleans.com/

UNTIL FEB. 15: Animal Rescue New Orleans will carry out its final stretch of hurricane rescue. We are currently interviewing/training locals to oversee a resident-run program.

AFTER FEB. 15: It has always been ARNO¹s goal to leave New Orleans with a strong program in place. We bring months of hard work and strategy to resident volunteers who will continue ARNO¹s work for animals.

To accommodate storage needs and focus on our food/water program, ARNO will no longer operate from Celebration Station in Metairie.*

NEW ARNO LOCATION:

Muttshack (Monies for this pull have been fronted by individuals, so please contact Claire Davis before making a donation to Muttshack directly to see how it is to be handled. The 6 dogs have to be transported to the west coast, and IMHO, I believe that these individuals will end up paying for that also. celoebs @yahoo.com) Cats: Goldie, Baby Cat, Tiger Dogs: Female Heeler(special thanks because I loved this dog), wonderful little Beagle/Hound mix, young pup listed as Catahoula mix but is really a sable merle Aussie mix.

There were also several adoptions, including the cutest little owner surrender dog named TJ.

Thanks to all of you for getting the word out, but most of all thank you to those groups who continue to save these animals, and to those who financially sponsor the animals. If you live out of town and want to help but can't get here, SUPPORT THESE GROUPS FINANCIALLY!!!!! They have huge vet and boarding bills. Special thanks to Jim Davis for driving from NOLA AGAIN to transport. Jim is an author who is down here writing about the Katrina rescue efforts. We must all buy his book when it comes out! New animals will be up tomorrow evening. Thanks, everybody!

Katrina effects on the Gulf coast

Sandy,

Not to in any way diminish the tragedy of New Orleans, but people forget that it wasn’t just Louisiana that was horrribly affected by Katrina. All across the Gulf, it is a daily battle to feed, rescue, shelter, reunite, and relocate the thousands of animals affected by the storm. To my knowledge, in the city of Biloxi, there is only one feed/water program operating. That is run by a very small group of people from all over the country. We generally only have a couple people covering the feed routes each day. When we find an animal that needs our assistance, we can’t take it to the Humane Societies because there simply is no room. We have arranged transport out of these shelters to make room for more animals, but, although it is a start, it is not nearly enough. The scenario is repeated all across the Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama coasts.

Hi Kim,

I've been down 3 times to help out in various places and am planning another trip. Some folks have contacted me regarding where they can help down there. How would someone know who to contact about helping in Biloxi for instance? I'm sure there are lots of volunteers who'd love to go and really do some good work and make a difference in the lives of the hurricane victims.....but often they don't know where to go or who to get the info from besides the big organizations. If you could find out and post who to contact in Biloxi about volunteering that would be great. Unless people know about a need, they aren't able to respond.

By the way I've personally (with the help of friends) transported over 60 dogs out of either high kill or overcrowded shelters in La, Ms and Tx. If an everyday person such as myself can figure out a way to do it,anyone can!!!!

Thanks,Meg
