OTC Acne Treatment Products That Work Fast

acne-products-that-workMost people can significantly improve the appearance of their acne via over the counter (OTC) treatment products. However, there are a huge variety of acne treatment products, creams, cleansers, face washes, and pads on the market, so how are you to know which one to choose?

Keep reading to discover the best active ingredients, formulas, and concentrations so you can find acne treatment products that actually work to get rid of acne fast.

Choosing a Gentle Cleanser

Using a cleanser to remove unwanted oils, skin cells, dirt, and cosmetic products is the first step in any good acne treatment regimen. While cleansers do not get rid of acne directly, but they allow the recommended products below to act more effectively. If the pores are blocked, the active ingredients in the acne treatments recommended below cannot get deep into the pore to fight the infection that causes acne.

The are two things you should consider when picking a cleanser. The first thing is the primary ingredient. This is the first ingredient on the ingredients list. It should say “purified water”. If the cleanser is not using water as its primary ingredient, it is likely based on alcohol.

Alcohol-based cleansers are no more effective than water-based cleansers and may dry out the skin and cause irritation. Do not think this is a benefit if you have oily skin as the acne treatment products that work to get rid of acne may also dry out the skin. Avoid the alcohol-based cleansers and stick to the water-based cleansers.

Salicylic Acid

The next step in a fast-acting OTC treatment is using a face wash containing salicylic acid. A face wash of this type is applied after using a cleanser, allowed to soak for about a minute, then rinsed off with water. This face wash will finish the process of removing oil and dirt from the face. It has the added benefit of also encouraging the top layers of dead skin cells (which often clog pores) to come off. This helps further unblock pores and makes the skin more receptive to the final step in our OTC acne treatment plan.

There are two things to consider in such a face wash: the concentration of salicylic acid and the whether or not certain chemical irritants are included.

Salicylic acid is typically found in either 1% or 2% concentrations. Both work quite well. If you had to pick between one or the other, the 2% would be ideal for those with oily, greasy skin, while the 1% may be better for those with dry skin.

Additionally, be sure to check the ingredients list for sodium laureth sulfate and sodium lauryl sulfate. These are skin irritants very common in face washes. They are added because they make the face wash foamy, but in reality they actually can trigger acne. Stick to a face wash which avoids these two ingredients.

If you have very fair and dry skin, you may be able to skip the salicylic acid step altogether. Alternatively, you may want to add on a moisturizer to help soothe the skin if removing salicylic acid reduces the effectiveness of your acne treatment plan.

Benzoyl Peroxide

The best acne treatment that is available OTC is benzoyl peroxide. This compound reacts when applied to the skin, forming a compound that is capable of utterly decimating the bacterial population that causes the acne infection. Benzoyl peroxide is the only OTC acne product that can improve acne overnight, as it fights the infection directly. Less bacteria will lead to a lessened appearance of acne.

Benzoyl peroxide is almost always found in the form of a cream. However, its concentration can vary greatly from brand to brand and product to product. It can be found in anything from 2.5% to up to 10% concentration. A growing body of evidence suggests that 5% or higher concentrations may not be any more effective at reducing acne but instead may irritate the skin. Stick to under 5% formulations for best results.
